Inhabitants: 11 millions
Area: 131,944 km²
Number of islands: 3,500 of which 300 inhabited.

The country is quickly ageing, even if it just pass 11 millions of inhabitants for the first time of its modern history. The number of youngsters less than 15 years old is since long below this of the over 65. So this country, not renewing entirely its generations, goes beyond difficulties due to an important number of aged people that will weight on finances and resources of the active population.
_ The growth of big cities, mainly Athens, the capital, continue its progress with now 3,274,392 inhabitants, that is 30% of the population, increasing the phenomenon of metropolisation and desertification of the countryside and mountains in the North of the country and mainly the Peloponnese.

Sailing
April: quite instable, Summer not yet established, cold sea.
May: less fresh evening, sometimes big cumulonimbus.
June, July, beginning August: impeccable. In the North, frequent strong storms.
September: sweet and less busy.
October: impeccable until the 20th, after more instable, more humid in the Ionian Sea.

Mist: no mist, except heat haze
Stream: negligible except in channels and narrows
Tides: practically none. But in some harbours, by strong meltemi, the level can drop by 20 to 60 cm.
If you sail with a catamaran, better to sail along the Turk coast because the waves are too short and too high near the Greek coast.
South of Peloponnese: sometimes, a long West swell coming from the wind blows of the Sicilian Strait. With a strong West wind, the sea swells quicker than in the Cyclades where it is broken by the islands. One must know that the wind speed average is the higher of Greece in Methoni.

Anchorage
Never try to shelter where there is a mountain but look for an isthmus or a low island... Anchor behind, near the flattest possible island where one may find real wind. Conversely to Turkey, it often possible to anchor in the middle of a bay, because the draught is clearly less important. But sometimes the narrowness or cluttering of the place will oblige you to moor with one or two springs on shore in order to stabilize your boat.

Wind system:
It is possible to divide Greek waters in 4 areas to better understand the winds system in Summer. The meltemi follows an axis Sea of Marmora, goes South, then divides itself to SW Aegean and SE Dodecanese.
Ionian Sea and West coast of Peloponnese: mainly NW wind, light and moderated; sometimes W wind moderated to strong, 2 to 4 Beaufort.
South Peloponnese, Methoni, Kythira, Cape Tanairon have the highest wind speed of Greece.
South of Attica to East Peloponnese: mainly North wind, light; medium meltemi. North, Thessaloniki, Volos, Chalkidiki: low wind, N sector, 2 to 4 Bf, but sudden and strong storms at the end of the day with winds reaching 35 to 50 knots. It comes in less than 30 minutes. Thassos and the N coast, low wind in Summer, N sector, 2 to 4 Bf.
North Cyclades and Sporades: meltemi (NE) is the main wind, at more than 4 Beaufort. Centre Cyclades, Tinos, Andros, Mykonos form a barrier on which breaks the meltemi, high frequency of winds of 5 to 8 Beaufort.
NE of the Aegean Sea, Ikaria, Samos and Kos: high frequency of winds, 5 to 8 Beaufort.

Meltemi
It is in July and August that meltemi comes to bother yachtsmen. This wind may blow under a dazzling sun and reach 6 to 8 Beaufort. It hollows short and jerky waves, difficult to sail for small boats, especially along Ikaria and in the Cavo Doro channel, North of Andros island. In Greece, it is not the wind that counts but the sea. When there is some quiet periods, people say that wind sleeps but Greek fishermen say: the sea works.
It is at about 11 AM that meltemi rises up, falling down at about sunset. But if it rises again later, it will bother you the night long to intensify early in the morning. And this for an unknown number of days (2,3,4 days), not often more. Powerful, it blows NE with short and hard waves that it is difficult to sail close to it.

Observations:

Water:
The local prices for water are increased by 80% in the marinas managed by the National Hellenic Tourism Office. In the other harbours, where water is discharged on the quays or brought by tanker, it is better to ask first the price to the harbour authorities.
Attention: in Summer, it may be difficult to get water in the islands, but this service tend to generalise at high price. In 2006, it was relatively easy to water quite everywhere.

Fuel:
One may generally get fuel (petrol) in fuel stations for cars. On the other hand, it is not always possible to find an adapted lubricant in far islands.
Gas-oil delivered on board in great harbours is sold at local price. An extra charge is sometimes claimed for delivery.
The national pleasure for some Greek fuel deliverymen is to try to count the more litres possible. It tends to disappear but to avoid this, here are some advises:
know the more precisely possible the quantity of fuel needed to fill up.
control that the fuel counter is at zero before the beginning.
if the deliveryman say he has not enough fuel and must come back, be twice more prudent.
discuss the price before filling up, especially if many retailers come. Some can announce a low price but be sure that it includes the delivery by the tanker.
Take care that no fuel pours in the harbour. The police may make a report - and she can be very attentive during the filling up.
Watch the petrol attendant and try not to let him stay near the pump during the filling up. Actually, he may inject air - paid - in the fuel thanks to a special valve.

Formalities

from harbour to harbour
More than 30,000 foreign boats did sail in Greek waters during the last years according to the government. So it is necessary to accomplish the following formalities when you come from abroad (EEC comprised).
Before to enter in an harbour, one must run up the yellow flag in the cross trees until the formalities are done.
Even if in many harbours where, automatically, the customs officer (or limenarkion) comes on board, it is better, by courtesy, to go to the harbour office (limenark) to present its Transit Log (if coming outside of EEC) and/or identity documents of the boat (or rental contract of a Greek boat). It is a very quick formality, that is an inscription in the book. When one decide to leave the harbour, one shall only present oneself again to retire the inscription.
It is a formality but also a security. Actually, if researches have to be conducted, one may determine the time, the weather conditions, etc. One must also present a crew list when one sail with a skipper, who shall make all the formalities except the passports inscription at the entry.
If one comes by sea in an entry harbour; In order:
— 1) Immigration, passports control
— 2) Customs, quite fastidious declaration, but not controlled on board, of the material and equipment. (2006 15€)
— 3) Harbour police with the entry and exit document of Greek harbours. Make yourself crew lists, it is appreciated by authorities and quickens formalities.
The cost for the 3 operations is 15€, not included the hours cost if you need a broker to make it (costs 100 to 150 €). (Speciality of Rhodes)
If you are controlled without those documents, the following of problems is to the appreciation of authorities. Anyway, you will either blocked, either send away to an entry harbour.

Only for units of more than 10 metres, the Private Pleasure Maritime Traffic Document (cost 30€ in May 2001) is used, with the crew list, to fight against illegal chartering. It shows the arrival and departure days (and to where) of the crew. Make stamp this document in every harbour (in theory because not much required in the islands far from the Turkish coast). Attention: customs fussy officers/policemen can pose problems to careless people.
This document, proof of your movements, authorize you to leave the Greek waters during a period of max 30 days. If you think that this period will be longer, you shall notice it to authorities and it will be noted on the document. So, by the way, you will be obliged to do again the immigration operation.

All fixed telephone numbers in Greece begin with 2 (with the format 2+town/zone prefix+called number).
All mobile telephone numbers in Greece begin with 6 (instead of the old 0).
To telephone to foreign countries, dial 00+country prefix+correspondant number.

The OTE has public offices in most of the big town (above 5,000 inhabitants). In its offices, you’ll find phone booth and quite all services (fax, telegram, telex, e-mail, etc.). Ask locally for the opening hours, that may vary between regions (from morning to beginning of the afternoon) and with some local adaptations, especially in tourist zones.
For your ordinary calls, you will find also public booths in popular places. You will find it rarely in a street but more frequently in squares, churchyards, railway stations, etc. It works with prepaid cards that you buy at kiosks, tobacco retailers (periptera), sometimes in groceries.
Some periptera let the public use their telephone; you pay normally according to units counter. But countered telephones tend to disappear to the benefit of cards telephones. This is the same cards that for public booths.

The Greek flag

According to the Independence declaration, Western countries impose a king, the prince Othon from Bavaria. He is elected in Nauplie on 8th August 1832.
The Greek flag is adopted the following year, showing the colours of Bavaria (blue and white), a cross evoking the official religion of the country (Christian orthodoxy) and nine bands recalling the 9 syllables of the Greek phrase: eleutheria i thanatos (freedom or death).
Greeks prefer to say that blue symbolises the clear Greek sky and reminds that God gave the Greek people the strength to fight for his independence when all were against him, and that white signifies the purity and the sacred character of the fight against the Turkish tyranny.

Turkey and Greece in zigzag

With a Greek flag boat, it is possible to sail between Greece and Turkey in zigzag without to take into account entries and exits.
In theory, if one fly unbder foreign flag, it is better to go up the Turkish coast and down the Greek coast to make only one entry and one exit without loosing time with the multiplication of formalities and payments of Transit logs (Turkey).

The Greek coin of 2 € shows a Spartan mosaic (3rd century BC), that represents Europe, a mythical Greek figure that is at the origin of the name of our continent, snatched by Zeus and changed in a white bull.
The 1 € coin represents an owl, illustration inspired by an old Athenian coin of 4 drachma (5th century BC).
The 50 cents coin shows Eleutherios Venizelos (1864-1936), one of the most prominent Greek political figure, who played a key role in the modernisation of the Greek state and the freedom of Northern Greece and Aegean islands.
The 10 cents coin presents Rigas Fereos-Velestinlis (1757-1798). He was a forerunner and a great figure of the Greek Enlightenment, and also the visionary of a Balkan confederation freed from the Ottoman yoke.
The 5 cents coin represents a modern tanker symbolising the novateur innovative spirit of the Greek marine.
The 2 cents coins represents a corvette, a ship used during the Greek Independence War (1821-1827).
The 1 cent coin shows a reproduction of an Athenian trireme - the biggest war ship during more than 200 years - dating from the Athenian democracy era (5th century BC).
